THE INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON ORGANIZING AND INCREASING OF TRADE UNION MEMBERSHIP IN KOVDOR 02.12.2013
The International seminar on “The using of organizing to increase trade union membership” for trade union activists of North-West regions the Russian Federation was held on November, 26 – 29, 2013 in Kovdor (Murmansk region). The joint seminar was organized by MMWU Central Council, ILO DWT and Country Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia and “Metalli” – the Finish Metalworkers’ Union. More than 30 trade union activists of enterprises in Murmansk region, “Borovichskij” refractory plant (Novgorod region) and “Nadvoitskij” aluminium plant (Republic Karelia) participated in the seminar.

A. Shvedov, MMWU Vice President opened the seminar and informed participants on social-economic situation in Mining and metallurgical complex of Russia and at number of enterprises of the industry, new tariff branch agreement negotiations and difficult situation at some enterprises. He paid special attention to organizational strengthening of the Union measures of increasing trade union membership and efficiency of the Union elected bodies.

A presentation about the role and place of International Labour Organization in the modern world, the meaning of ILO conventions for society and further development of decent work conception in different regions of the World, made by Sergeyus Glovaskas, Senior Specialist in Workers’ Activities of ILO Moscow Office was interesting and appreciated by participants. The presentation was followed by discussion of using of the organizing technologies. Participants asked numerous questions and came to conclusion that business technologies don’t always work, and difficult tasks of trade unions’ activity need devoted and selfless persons first of all.

 Markku Pietila, “Metalli”, Finish Metalworkers’ Union International Secretary, spoke about the activity of the Union, main methods of increasing of trade union membership and difficult tariff negotiations on concluding of branch collective agreement for year 2014.

Participants visited the deepest open-cast mine and workshops of “Kovdorskij” ore mining and processing enterprise and was impressed by the size and complicated modern machinery of the plant.
